Clean with neutral detergent.
Joint filler material remains in the hollows. Filler is also prone to remaining in unglazed check-pattern areas, and so black filler should be avoided.
Some areas of the sides are bare of glaze, but this is a characteristic of the manufacturing process and not a defect.
