This is Majolica tile of Maruman’s own original design. Different colors are applied by hand, not by machine. The deep gloss produced by applying copious amounts of translucent glaze is rarely seen elsewhere. Because all work is done by hand there are slight differences in how glaze is applied, and this results in variations in color intensity and brush-stroke markings. The designs, composed of drawn lines 1 mm wide and also 1 mm high, are painted in three different colors. To keep the glaze from seeping out beyond these lines, and to contain it cleanly at the tile borders, the tiles are colored one by one with attention and care.
(Majolica tile: This got its start as a multicolored series in the latter half of the 19th century, when the Italian technique of tin-glazed and painted Majolica ware was taken to England. In Japan, some 80 to 100 years ago, many manufacturers made their own original majolica tile, which gained popularity at such export destinations as India and Taiwan. Because the ingredients used at the time cannot be employed today, producing the same colors as in times past is extremely difficult.)
