A sense of depth is produced not only by the intricate sculpting, but also by the feeling of translucence of the glaze. The intensity differs between where the glaze collects at the base of the cut lines and on the flat surfaces. This makes the intricate cuts stand out sharply. For the flat DC-1, a sense of three-dimensionality is produced by changing the ground coat and the top coat. This does produce a slight hint of gray, but conversely it eliminates a sense of blank featurelessness.
Using the flat tiles together with sculptured ones of this series makes the differences between the two more conspicuous, producing a sense of sumptuousness.
